Imperialism is the idea that a country can increase its power and wealth by controlling other peoples. Imperialism had inspired major European powers to build empires in the 1700s and 1800s. Nationalism runs in opposition to Imperialism, during this time many national groups within Europe's empires began pushing for independence.
